‘I’m a thrice-weekly runner, and these are the only shorts I’ll ever wear’

For comfort and maximum performance, your jogging attire is just as important as your shoes. So, running enthusiast Laura Hill has compiled a few of her favourite practical exercise shorts to add to your shopping cart.

In my humble opinion, after running shoes, shorts are the next most important purchase. Why? Because no matter how many kilometres you plan to run, the shorts you wear need to be comfortable, non-restrictive, be made from sweat-wicking material, offer good coverage and have ample storage.

Running can be hard at the best of times, so you need a pair of shorts that won’t ride up, slip down or chafe your inner thighs. Like most products today, there are so many types of shorts to choose from, but running shorts generally fall into three categories:

  • Loose, flowy shorts with a split down the side
  • Figure hugging, tights-like shorts that have a compression effect
  • and The new kid on the block: 2-in-1 shorts that combine an inner layer and a loose short over the top

Some of the styles above might have inbuilt briefs to help prevent chafing from your underwear, but if you choose a style that doesn’t have this feature, be sure to wear sweat-wicking sports underwear (especially when it’s warm) to reduce your chances of having to apply nappy rash cream to your private parts post-run. Ouch.

I’ve been running for more than 15 years, and logged thousands of sweaty kilometres, and these are the only shorts I’ll wear and recommend to my friends and fellow runners.

The Nike Eclipse 2-in-1 shorts offer flexible, moisture-wicking breathability for the long haul. They are quick drying and the Nike flex fabric stretches with your body, while the high split hem lets you move freely.

There’s a lot of things to love about these shorts including the smooth, wide, knit elastic waistband, which has an internal drawcord that lets you adjust the shorts for the perfect fit. But the feature that seals the deal for me is the stretchy inner short. Why? Because it has a unique in-built pocketing system to keep your essentials close at hand. The pocket is situated on the outer thigh and I can slide my iPhone 11 into it without even feeling it move while running. Plus, there’s two extra pockets on the waistband to carry keys and gels. But if you still need another reason to try these shorts, then how about the fact that they’re made from at least 50 per cent recycled polyester. The material comes from plastic bottles that Nike has diverted from landfills since 2010.

The brand’s two-in-one Flint running short does exactly what a good pair of shorts should do – protect and support – so that you can enjoy the moment. Two pockets provide plenty of storage, including one cleverly placed phone pocket on the inner for easy access and no moving around.

These fitted, next-to-skin shorts offer great coverage and the barely-there feeling won’t distract you from picking up the pace. The Nulux™ fabric offers near weightless coverage for a seriously smooth stride. It features snug drop-in-pockets to keep your phone in place, strategically placed gel pockets for super quick access when you need to fuel-up and a high-rise waist that keeps you feeling covered and secure.

If you want a basic, flowy pair of running shorts at a great price, then don’t look past these shorts. Power your run with these road shorts, which feature an elasticated waistband for comfort and drawcord for adjustability and a pocket at the back to store keys. Reflective bars provide visibility in low-light conditions to keep you safe.

These 2-in-1 shorts are similar to the Nike Eclipse and feature material that wicks sweat away and dries really fast. The inner gives a next-to-skin feel without the squeeze of a tight compression short, and the stretch woven fabric on outer short delivers superior comfort and durability with mesh overlay detail for added breathability. Ergonomic flatlock seams deliver a comfortable, chafe-free fit and reflective details provide greater visibility on low-light runs. There’s plenty of storage including a secure zip back pocket and an expandable centre-front waistband pocket is water-resistant and keeps your phone secure, with no bouncing.
