This week’s full moon is no ordinary one. It’s a Super Flower Moon, occurring in Scorpio, which means it’ll bring up some strong feelings.
This supermoon is also known as a Flower Moon because it coincides with the blooming of spring flowers in the northern hemisphere. The name sounds pretty — but it’s also apt, since this Super Flower Moon occurs in Scorpio, a sign that’s often associated with growth and change. “Scorpio is about uncovering the truth – even if it isn’t especially pretty. (think: Mulder and Scully in The X Files),” explains astrologer Emma Vidgen from thewayward.co. “On a macro level, look out for news stories where ‘the truth’ is leaked or finally revealed. The energy is very much about illuminating what’s really going on, even if it may be a little hard to hear.”
What is a supermoon?
A supermoon is a particularly special event because it occurs when a full moon is at its perigee position or the point at which it is closest to Earth. It’s because the Moon is so close that it appears to be so big and that proximity also means its effects are more powerful than a regular full moon.
“Expect this full moon to illuminate issues you may have been trying to avoid confronting,” says Vidgen. “Being in isolation has forced many of us to confront emotional clutter we’re usually too busy to notice. Take this opportunity to reflect on what old patterns and stories you’ve been holding on to that have raised their head during this unusual time.”
When can I see the supermoon in Australia?
The super flower moon will be most visible at 8.45pm AEST on May 7 and should be a lovely sight in those areas with clear skies.
What does this supermoon mean for us?
The supermoon being in Scorpio means it encourages introspection and deep thinking, says Vidgen. “Full moons are always a time of illumination and release, a time to reflect on what isn’t serving you and what you’re ready to let go of.
“Scorpio is a sign synonymous with the psyche, esotericism and shadow work, so this particular full moon is considered especially potent for introspection and spiritual practices.”
If the final supermoon of 2020 teaches us anything, it’s that expressing our feelings is important — even if they feel small compared to what’s going on in the world. With this lunar event behind us, we can enter the rest of the year feeling lighter, clearer, and ready to start fresh.
“Mars, this full moon’s traditional ruler is squaring the moon which could make your interactions with others a little salty. Pay attention to conflict. If you have terse words with someone, take time to think about the real issues is behind your run-in. Channel that forensic Scorpio investigative energy and dig a little deeper to consider, ‘What’s really going on here?’” explains Vidgen.
According to Vidgen, this supermoon is also a good time to clear more than the air, “There’s also a purging quality to Scorpio energy (it rules the excretory system), so you may feel inspired to do a big declutter. Whether it’s tackling the bathroom cabinets or delving into emotional baggage this is a great lunation to get rid of something you’ve been holding onto past its use-by date.”
Which star signs will feel this supermoon the most?
Vidgen believes it’s the fixed signs – Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus and Leo – who will feel this full moon the most.
How can I work with the full moon energy?
Luckily, Vidgen has provided a ‘cheat sheet’ for how each sign can work with the energy of this moon.

When is the next supermoon due to take place?
The Royal Observatory explains that because of how the dynamics of orbits work, supermoons usually occur in runs of two or three with longer gaps of several months between each set.
This means we have to wait 11 months for the next one, which will be visible in April 2021.
