Cat’s husband’s performance in bed has been an issue their whole relationship. Not anymore, thanks to ‘Moon Milk’ and its benefits.

For as long as I’ve known him, my husband D has been a terrible sleeper. He wakes in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep, gets up before dawn and during the hours he is asleep, he grinds his teeth, suggesting that even when he is out, his mind is still active.

I worry that his poor sleep habits are affecting his health and wellbeing. And while it’s good for me that he gets up so early (he has always taken the ‘early shift’ with the kids) the difference in our natural body clocks isn’t brilliant for us as a couple.

So when I read about the new ‘Moon Milk’ trend I was intrigued.

It’s not just another silly health trend

Although I’m not normally someone who jumps on the latest wellbeing bandwagon (smoothie bowls notwithstanding) the promise that Moon Milk aids good sleep seemed to be worth a try.

Moon Milk is a remedy from sleep deprivation that comes from Ayurveda, an Indian health practice thought to be more than 5000 years old. One of the core principles of Ayuverda is finding harmony between the mind, body and soul; so sleeping well is crucial.

But essentially Moon Milk is just warm milk with honey and cinnamon. Simon Favorito is a holistic chef, wholefoods educator and coach. He tells me that Moon Milk has a number of potential health benefits.

“I’ve been having Moon Milk since I was quite young, my mother used to give it to me before bedtime to help me sleep. I believe it can create relaxation in the body and mind,” he says. Although the most common ingredients are milk, honey and cinnamon, other spices and powders can be added too. Simon recommends using good quality raw honey and unrefined spices.

While each ingredient has its own sleep inducing qualities, the over-all effect of Moon Milk could, in part, be a placebo effect. “Everything we do has a certain level of placebo, whether is be meditation, going to the doctor or drinking a medicinal elixir,” says Simon.

“When we believe something will work and we are emotionally invested in it our inner biochemistry, emotional state and brain changes to support it. My experience in holistic nutrition has shown me that they key to health is creating healthy habits and rituals that help us stay in synch with the natural flow and cycles of nature. So if a warm, aromatic drink is a cue for us to relax and sleep, then that’s great.”

It’s got to be worth a try. I made my husband Moon Milk before bed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Of course, he was a little cynical, but he was happy to indulge my experiment. Look, it wasn’t exactly a magic bullet. Perhaps he nodded off a little quicker than usual, but he was still wide-awake in the middle of the night.

Maybe it’s just too early to say. I plan to keep making him the Moon Milk. It might never help him sleep, but it definitely won’t do him any harm. And even if the special ingredients in the Moon Milk don’t make a difference, a little TLC can go a long way.

How to make Moon Milk

Simon makes many variations of Moon Milk, but this one is the simplest.


  • 250ml (1 cup) x milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon fresh grated cinnamon
  • 1 level tsp raw honey
  • 1/8 tsp fresh vanilla seeds or organic vanilla past
  • Freshly grated nutmeg (to top)


  1. Warm the milk on the stove.
  2. Add to blender with everything but the nutmeg and blend for three to five seconds.
  3. Shave fresh nutmeg on top to serve.
