Any athleisure stylemaker worth their Nike Vapormax knows that bike pants are hot right now – really hot. But they can also be a tricky trend to master, some ride up while others are just too tight – oh and the risk of camel toe!
Enter yoga brand Alo, whose high-waisted bike pants have been selling out on every corner of the internet. They’ve also been found on the legs of Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, and have garnered press for being the world’s ‘most flattering bike shorts’.

Using the brand’s signature Airbrush fabric, they are made to sculpt, lift and smooth. Yes, please. They sit mid-thigh and according to reviewers ‘stay in place’ – no riding up. They are also available in an extensive colorwave of strawberry, black, a glossy black, white, neon lime, pink, blue haze, ultraviolet and slate gray so there is a shade for everyone’s wardrobe. But the biggest comment from reviewers has been how flattering they are – no small feat from a piece of material that literally sucks to one’s hips and thighs.
Still not convinced to dip into the trend, we spoke to Danielle Sogimbene the head of style (sport) at The Iconic about what to look for when buying a pair of bike shorts online. Her advice? “Fit, fabrication and length are key.”
“I recommend high-waisted styles with thicker waistbands to deliver additional hold,” she explains. “While for length, try mid-thigh styles (or a touch longer) [like these Running Bare Ab Tastic Spin Bike tights] to deliver a more flattering silhouette. Finally with fabrics, for added aesthetics, opt for thicker materials with plenty of stretch to work a smoother shape, without compromising on comfort.”
An often key concern of bike-pant wearers are that they start mid-thigh and end up in the groin. “Eliminate the chance of shorts that slide by choosing ‘perfect-fit bike shorts’ with a tapered leg and thigh-hugging seams around the leg hem [like these Adidas Short Tights],” says Danielle. “Additionally, investing in quality bike shorts made from moisture-wicking fabrics will reduce both chafing and fabric-slide.”
If you’re a person who believes the more the merrier when it comes to wardrobe buys, along with Alo, Danielle says there are lots of great pairs on the market. “If you’re looking to achieve a more sporty aesthetic, try styles from brands such as Nike, 2XU and Lorna Jane, while for fun prints and designs to take from a yoga class, to coffee with the girls, take a look at brands like P.E. Nation, B.O.D and Aim’n.”
